Selective Female Abortion in Albania

In the last few years Albania saw a drop in births of girls as well as in children per family.

Cultural heritage sets that families should have at least a male to keep on with the family name. This, combined with smaller families, leads to selective abortions.

The law says that abortion is possible up to the 12th week of pregnancy. In most of the case the sex of the fetus is visible only on the 17th week. This means that the selective abortion becomes also an illegal behavior, practiced more often by private clinics rather than public hospitals.
